Some Fun with Antiquated Hat Terms - Part Three- 1800 - 1900

!±8± Some Fun with Antiquated Hat Terms - Part Three- 1800 - 1900

I have uncovered some obscure and unusual words while looking back at the history of hats and headdress. Having recently finished reading THE PROFESSOR AND THE MADMAN (by Simon Winchester, HarperCollins 1998) about the making of the Oxford English Dictionary, I thought it might be fun to explore the definitions and etymology of some of these ancient terms, most of which have all but disappeared from modern use. [I'll breakup this project into three or four parts, so stay tuned.]

To qualify for inclusion below, the word must show up with a squiggly red line at Microsoft Word's "spell check" tool. So here goes:
[Note: As I move into part three of this project, terms become less lost in antiquity. I have included a few words, albeit rarely used today that did show up "spell check".]

[Psyche Knot

[a. Gr. (in L. ps ch ) breath, f. to breathe, to blow, (later) to cool; hence, life (identified with or indicated by the breath); the animating principle in man and other living beings, the source of all vital activities, rational or irrational, the soul or spirit, in distinction from its material vehicle, the or body; sometimes considered as capable of persisting in a disembodied state after separation from the body at death.

In Mythology, personified as in 1c. By Plato and other philosophers extended to the anima mundi, conceived to animate the general system of the universe, as the soul animates the individual organism. By St. Paul (developing a current Jewish distinction between rua , , spirit or breath, and nephesh, , soul) used for the lower or merely natural life of man, shared with other animals, in contrast with the or spirit, conceived as a higher element due to divine influence supervening upon the original constitution of unregenerate human nature: see PSYCHIC a. 2, PSYCHICAL 2. (For this and other developments in pre-Christian Judaism, and the N.T. writings, see R. H. Charles, Hist. of the Doctrine of a Future Life, 1899.)]

1. The soul, or spirit, as distinguished from the body; the mind.
1658 SIR T. BROWNE Hydriot. iv. 61 Why the Psyche or soul of Tiresias is of the masculine gender. 1794 SULLIVAN View Nat. II. 279 The two essentials in the composition of all sublunary things were, by the ancient Greeks, termed psyche and hyle, that is, spiritus et materia, soul and body. 1877 tr. Virchow in Tyndall Fragm. Sc. (1879) II. xv. 407 If I explain attraction and repulsion as exhibitions of mind, as psychical phenomena, I simply throw the Psyche out of the window, and the Psyche ceases to be a Psyche. 1879 LEWES Study Psychol. 73 The most accredited [ancient] thinkers not only detached Man from Nature, but the Mind from the Organism; they invented a Psyche as the source of all mental phenomena. 1888 New Princeton Rev. Mar. 272 Psychology is the science of the psyche or soul. 1896 P. GARDNER Sculptured Tombs Hellas 24 The psyche, to Homer, is not in the least like the Christian Soul, but is a shadowy double of the man, wanting alike in force and wisdom. 1905 E. J. DILLON in Contemp. Rev. Aug. 287 It is difficult to realise the position and to picture the psyche of Rozhdestvensky [the Russian admiral who fired on the North Sea fishing fleet].

b. The animating principle of the universe as a whole, the soul of the world or anima mundi.
1647 H. MORE Song of Soul Notes 138/2 Such is the entrance of Psyche into the body of the Vniverse, kindling and exciting the dead mist. 1678 CUDWORTH Intell. Syst. I. iv. §21. 388 This is taken by Plotinus to be the Eternal Psyche, that actively produceth All Things, in this Lower World, according to those Divine Ideas. Ibid. §23. 406 But in other places..he frequently asserts, above the Self~moving Psyche an Immovable and Standing Nous or Intellect, which was properly the Demiurgus.

c. In later Greek Mythol., personified as the beloved of Eros (Cupid or Love), and represented in works of art as having butterfly wings, or as a butterfly; known in literature as the heroine of the story related in the Golden Ass of Apuleius. Hence attrib. in sense 'like that of Psyche', as in Psyche-knot (of hair), Psyche-mould, Psyche task.

Creating a Tank-Top Out of a T Shirt

!±8± Creating a Tank-Top Out of a T Shirt

Summer tank tops in low supply? Dislike the baggy sleeves on your new t-shirt? Why not change fave t-shirt into a shell top instead? Follow these simple instructions to turn any t-shirt into a tank top.

You are going to need the following supplies:

- T-shirt

- Pair of scissors

- Tailor's chalk or a fabric crayon

- Needle and thread or sewing machine

- Sewing pins

- Iron

Remove the sleeves. The first thing you need to do to turn a t-shirt into a tank top is to cut off the sleeves. You need to turn your t-shirt inside out before doing this. The seams must be visible for reference later. Cut off both sleeves at the inside edge of the seam using a sharp pair of scissors and your seams as a cutting guide. You can't ensure a straight cut when you cut the sleeve off while it's laying flat. So don't cut your sleeve through a double layer, cut around the whole sleeve in the single layer.

Take some of the length off of the shirt. Typically, the tank top style is considerably shorter than t-shirts. In addition to cutting off the sleeves of the t-shirt, you'll also need to trim away a bit of the bottom of your t-shirt in order to make it look more like a tank top.

Mark a 2" cut line using your ruler or measuring tape and your chalk line around the entire bottom of your shirt. You can take it out more if you need it. Measure the new length first by holding up the shirt to your chest before you make any cuts. Again, in a single layer cut your fabric/cloth working your way around with the entire bottom.

Cut along the sewed lines. To resemble a tank top cut off the sleeves and the bottom of your t-shirt. You can stop at this stage if you are satisfied with the grunge look. You should really sew a seam into the arms and bottom of your new tank top, however, if you desire to avoid fraying. This can be achieved by hand stitching, or with a sewing machine. Don't worry, for a simple task like this, the sewing machine is easy to use.

The first thing to do is to roll the cuff of your tank top up, at minimum, 1/2 of an inch. Use your ruler and any chalk to accomplish an even hem all the way around your top's sleeves. Using your iron, flatten your sleeve in order to keep your hem from shifting. Make use of pins to keep your fold intact. Repeat this with both sleeves, and the bottom of the tank top.

Your seam needs to have a tight stitch even if you are sewing by hand or, with a machine a simple straight stitch will do the job! There should be no gaps between where the thread goes down into the fabric and comes up again to make a new stitch. Your hem will last longer with a tighter stitch.

Ideas and tips for finding jobs, resume preparation and conduct of interviews

!±8± Ideas and tips for finding jobs, resume preparation and conduct of interviews

Work Wanted Prepare a CV Following the model curriculum Dress for the interview Before the interview Interview and performance etiquette Interview follow-up / Resolve and positive thinking

1 Work Wanted

When looking for a job if you are unemployed or in greener pastures, it is important not to eliminate potential opportunities on vague assumptions. Do your homework and find out what you can on everypossible. Do not reject anything of hand.

Today, job search resources for large and easily accessible. With an Internet-enabled computer, there are an almost endless inventory of job opportunities, resources, company information, news, data and direct applications. Search online, there are many ways that is very useful, not only in finding jobs, but also to learn about the employer in order to prepare for an interview and verification of securityCompanies to ensure they meet specific criteria as an employer. Take advantage of networking opportunities as possible. Keep your eyes and ears open to small growing companies and large companies and do not hesitate to help from friends, relatives, former colleagues and all other sources of assistance in the search.

Never panic. The development of a negative outlook, it is affecting every aspect of your job search. Often, success will come whenYou least expect it, or in unexpected circumstances. If the job market is bad as it is today, the challenge may be greater and the longer the search continued, but your perseverance will keep you ahead of the competition and eventually pay. If you stop, you have to rely on themselves. Do not stop, a believer in you. Have faith!

2 Prepare your CV

Over the years I have reviewed thousands of resumes. Of course, I have the lead vocals, has seen the absurdand everything else. The advent of email, once again the remarkable things more convenient and efficient for everyone, but that did not change the essential composition of resuming document. The same rules still apply:

-Creating an outline for your resume. List the things you highlight how your skills, history and other relevant information. There are predefined formats for ease of use can resume preparation, and by all means look, if only toIdeas for your personal curriculum. Or you can use a template and enter your information.

-Avoid splashy design features, fussy or distracting, unless you request or constructive notice, and you want to draw attention to your skills drawing. However, some limit the design 'simple, elegant and serious. Let your wallet speak for themselves, as to these special abilities.

-If you are filing a return, you should use good quality paper and inks to preventnot white, off white or cream. Font type should be more traditional in character. You do not want to draw attention to the contents, the choices of character.

-You can organize your resume so that it is easy to follow, and provides a clear, linear narrative. Do not be hard to decipher dates of work, timelines, or other data or information.

You-Think about what the employer finds important in a curriculum. These include: experience, skills, training, duration of previous work, STABILITY 'TESTS character, commitment, reliability, REFERENCES. Are you a team player?

-Do not allow any holes in the curriculum. Go to a serious interviewer want to know why there is a gap of three years of your work history. Duration of a minor deficiencies can be easily explained, but be prepared to explain the long, and I urge that this be included in your resume. Remember, your resume as a shelter and, of course, you have competition. Your resume can be cast aside, if you leave largeunexplained gaps. This is especially true if your career is thin, and / or workload the past short-lived. Weakness in these areas require the most compelling arguments for the settings made in other places in your resume and cover letter. Remember that your CV, make a case for the employer to call you in a job interview. The work is one. If you shine in this interview, able to overcome mistakes on your resume.

-If you have the listHobbies and entertainment preferences, be practical in your decisions. It seems to be a couch potato or not reckless adventurer. Do not list hobbies or history means the need to be away for long stretches. Employers prefer a candidate in the round (which will be perceived as well-adjusted), but with all those exotic jungle walk halfway around the world, a greater devotion to outdoor activities to include, as your career professional. The interest in fitness, cycling,Walking, hiking, fishing or photography, for example, with one eye will be perceived less alert. Community service, unless indicated to excess, is certainly in order.

List to define skills as most employers would be. Non-List "copies" or "answer the phone," as the skills, even if you work for office use. Look silly and maybe a little 'light in the Department of mind. Now, if these functions have been described in a previous position, in the course of your work, this can be used as such. OnlyDo not list them individually as "skills".

-The most important references are professionals. Personal references are in order, and good long-term implies ownership and can not hurt. Apparently, then, the parish priest or director of a prestigious charity than that of the first year roommate at the University of Party City. To be brief. How to obtain professional credentials, so that the information is correct. Do not list contact information for past employment that you know are out, outdated or inaccurate.

Avoid frivolous aspirations-or short-term work that the lack of seriousness. The reality show were you went with your cousin in the south to develop, but you were in the midst of real jobs. Exclude it. Ditto on the name-dropped. An obvious attempt to impress with big names and references celebrities can draw a cold eye of an interviewer and your curriculum vitae to be "filed" bin can be determined. If you feel like you're exaggerating, you are. I was alwaysinvented by the transparency of these efforts.

-Please read your resume several times before you feel ready for it. And 'grammar, writing clean, consistent and easy to follow? Do not forget to check your spelling. Spelling errors suggest sloppy management of work and perhaps a lack of intelligence. Profit from your word processing program easy to use and do it well.

-If you send a copy of your resume by e-mail, look for some small details. Notlooking back to the great document in the envelope wrong size, or print something on the envelope by hand. It 's like putting a pair of work boots with a new dress.

These little fairies are sloppy careless mistakes when you need to look meticulously.

-If possible, write a targeted cover letter. Try to avoid the mass production of "Dear Employer" approach, and direct mail to the company or person to whom your resume, unless unknown. Thisis quite simple once you've written your letter. So the changes are in reference to names, companies, job titles, etc. You have the time to take the lazy approach and you will see more serious and professional than the other guy.

3 Following the model curriculum

After submitting your resume, then wait a couple of days, if you have not heard from the receiver, a notebook covered with e-mail and e-mail and / or make a call. Keep it short and to the point,Express your continued interest in the opening and thanked the recipients for the opportunity to submit your resume. Point out that there are available for the convenience of the recipient should be selected for an interview. This may be the element that allows the interview, rather than being cast aside with the rest of the pack. But do not be a parasite. Once you have this limit is probably no turning back.

4 Dress for an interview

Like many other researchEmployment offers much common sense. In dressing for an interview, think "seriously". This does not mean you should prepare for a funeral. But if you are not the local bar or coffee to use tanning beds to choose conservative business attire - clothing, speaking a professional attitude. For men this means that to maintain a clean dress, a one-color T-shirt and a business-like.

You can not go wrong with a nice white shirt and blue tie, maybe with a light pattern. WearSocks, pants fit, or are in the same dark hue. Shoes should be business-like, clean and polished. Do not wear excessive jewelry, earrings, bracelets, necklaces and other ornaments. Watch and a wedding ring, if you are married, you should wear anything. Hair must be fresh, natural, professional-length, free of charge goo style to imitate the most recent street. Be careful with Cologne.

For women, the approach is very similar. Wear a nice dress in a place, and not too tight. Keep the bear in the closet and the club will wear a skirt to work and compare it with opaque hose or tights and a matching low-heeled shoes. Go easy on the jewelry. No radical nail polish, arm load of bracelets, toe rings, earrings, multiple, or more funky necklaces, anklets, or anything that suggests a disco at 2:00 clock.
